Aerosols are minor, compared to gases, components of the atmosphere, but their role is enhanced by their omnipresence, interactions with atmospheric radiation, and participation in chemical reactions and cloud formation processes. It was not until the 1950s that the regulation of particulate substances in the ambient air has been recognized as an important issue in pollution control. Since that time, the particle size, beside the total concentration of suspended particles, started to be an important subject of environmental studies.

Porous media found in the natural environment represent a good example of media with microstructure. Their pores contain different phases of liquids and gases filling them as well as the interfaces between the phases. This issue has been frequently discussed by soil physicists and chemists, chemical and petro engineers, seismologists and other researchers interested in geosciences.

World peace can be better sustained with the accelerated transfer of technology - has been a belief at NATO, US Congress and the National Center for Hydroscience and Engineering (NCCHE) since the mid 1990's. With the support and funding from the US Congress, the NCCHE has been planning to transfer the state-of-the-art research and management tools, computational models, in the areas of water resources and environmental engineering to foreign countries. The objective of the project is to assist the researchers and engineers in those countries who plan tro speed up the development of their water resources and the improvement of their environmental quality, which shall result in the enhancement of their people's living standard, as well as desire for peace.

The topics of lectures and discussions covered a wide range of problems related to the two huge electrical conductivity anomalies existing in Poland, unique in the world scale. These are the North-German-Polish anomaly related to the Permian basin and the Carpathian anomaly.

The year 2004 was unique not only because of the occurrence on December 26 of a giant M = 8.8 earthquake near the coast of Sumatra and the following tsunami, causing over 200,000 casualities on the coasts of the Indian Ocean. The year saw also the totally unexpected earthquakes of Kaliningrad Region on September 21, the greatest earthquakes ever noted in Northern Poland and a relatively strong quake in Podhale Region in Southern Poland on November 30, spurting off a long series of aftershocks.
