Thermodynamic and Mechanical Theory of Rapid Phase Transformations in the Earth's Interior

Volume: 64
Series:
The paper includes several results which deal with some topics relevant to the earthquake model based on the idea of rapid phase transformation in the Earth's interior. Such a phase transformation is supposed to change an inclusion of a metastable phase into a more stable one by way of a detonational-like process. The discussion is given on the possibility of metastable equilibrium of two phases in the presence of non-hydrostatic stress. A general thermostatic theory of solid multiphase systems is also developed.

This volume contains the results of recordings of some elements of atmospheric electricity and daily observations of major meteorological factors, noted at the S. Kalinowski Geophysical Observatory of the Polish Academy of Sciences at Świder. Data for the years 1957-1970 have been published in "Prace Obserwatorium Geofizycznego im. St. Kalinowskiego w Świdrze", Nos. 16, 19, 20, 22, 25, 29, 33, 34, 38 and in "Materiały i Prace Zakładu Geofizyki PAN", Nos. 23, 28, 38, 44 and 53, respectively. Beginning with this issue, the text will be published in French and English, instead of French and Polish as before.

The wave field of a propagating rupture is determined on the basis of the mathematical solution (Vvedenskaya, 1969) for continuous surface distribution of balanced double couples. The results obtained show that the field is characterized by a pulse train in the longitudinal and shear waves which indicate the time distribution of energy release at the source and the direction of its radiation into space.
