Thermodynamic and Mechanical Theory of Rapid Phase Transformations in the Earth's Interior
Volume: 64
Series:
Abstract:
The paper includes several results which deal with some topics relevant to the earthquake model based on the idea of rapid phase transformation in the Earth's interior. Such a phase transformation is supposed to change an inclusion of a metastable phase into a more stable one by way of a detonational-like process. The discussion is given on the possibility of metastable equilibrium of two phases in the presence of non-hydrostatic stress. A general thermostatic theory of solid multiphase systems is also developed. Further a generalized theory of reaction waves (detonations, deflagrations and shock waves) is developed. Endothermic reaction waves are considered too. A rigorous approach reveals several possibilities which had been overlooked by other authors. The paper sets up solutions to the problem of initiation of reaction waves in a plane metastable layer by a plane shock wave. It is also attempted to establish a link between the axioms of the generalized theory and the Mie-Grüneisen equation for the transformation products.
