Solar radiation gives rise to the primary (external) electric current systems in the magnetosphere and ionosphere of the Earth. Within the Earth, which is a good conductor of electricity, the electromagnetic induction produces a secondary system of currents, dependent, among other things, on the conductivity distribution in the Earth's interior. The electromagnetic field observed at the Earth's surface originates from these two sources. We will consider here a simplified model, in which the Earth's surface is flat. Such an approximation is correct if we adopt a lower limit for the frequencies we consider.

The Carpathians form a great arc of mountains, which stretches more than 1300 km from the Vienna Forest to the Iron Gate on the Danube. On the west the Carpathians are linked with the eastern Alps and on the east pass into the Balkan chain. Traditionally, the Carpathians are subdivided into the West and East Carpathians. The Carpathian Fold Belt system offers an outstanding opportunity to study the dynamics of astenosphere and lithosphere during volcanic arc and related fore- and back-arc basin development in the context of the Alpine orogenesis.

The bulletin contains a list of local earthquakes which occurred in 2000 in Poland. Most of these seismic events were induced by mining in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin and Lubin Copper Basin. Induced seismicity is observed less frequently in the Rybnik Coal District and the Bełchatów Surface Coal Mining area. Mining induced earthquakes with magnitude M > 2.6 were not recorded in the Bełchatów area in 2000. A few local tectonic earthquakes occurred in the Western Carpathians.

The Polish Polar Station (77°00'N, 15°33'E) of the Institute of Geophysics is located nearby the entrance to the Hornsund fiord (Spitsbergen). It is situated at the northern shore of the fiord, by the Isbjornhamna bay, at a height of about 10 m a.s.l. The fiord's axis extends, roughly speaking, from east to west. The fiord is approximately 30 km long, 5-15 km wide, and penetrates the island upto half of its width.

Ozone observations have been made by means of Dobson spectrophotometer No. 84 in the Geophysical Observatory at Belsk since March 1963. This publication presents all total ozone values and vertical distribution of ozone over Belsk in 2002 obtained from the conventional Umkehr observations.
