The aim of the work was to analyze some aspects of connections between thermal stresses in the Earth's crust and upper mantle, and processes of earthquakes. The work is limited to the simplest problems only, the complex problem of convection in the Earth's mantle being left outside the scope of present work. The question of convection is included only to the discussion of dislocational representation of thermal stresses.

 

The plain problem of the theory of elasticity, concerning the influence of shear crack on stresses and displacements on the cylindrical hole boundary and in its vicinity, as well as the influence of the cylindrical hole on the stress intensity factors at crack tips, are considered. Obtained formulae allow to calculate stresses and displacements in arbitrary point of the medium, when knowing the hole-crack geometry as well as the external stress field. In the last part of the work the problem of determination of stresses and displacements outside the cylindrical hole, basing on the measurements of these values on the hole boundary, is considered.
